The FCA Quality organization is currently seeking a highly skilled, solutions-oriented Materials Lab Metallurgist to join the Quality team at the Belvidere, IL Assembly Plant. The Materials Lab Metallurgist will support the Quality Lab Manager in the coordination of all activities of metallurgical testing to improve quality. The selected individual will have experience in managing cross-functionally and possess a broad knowledge of the entire automotive engineering, manufacturing, and quality landscape. The candidate must be high-energy, hands-on individual with strength of convictions - a self-confident leader who, in part due to his/her personal presence, style and demeanor, effectively sells ideas and solutions to others.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain equipment in the metallurgical lab
  • Manage data from tests and observations and manipulate that data into Excel charts/graphs for presentations
  • Perform a variety of metallurgical testing (i.e.: hardness, tensile/compression, profile, fluid boiling points, specific gravity, pH, and color matching, etc.)
  • Operate a variety of specialized equipment, including x-ray machines, spectrometers, electrolytic analyzers, pH meters, centrifuges, cut off saws, mounting press, polisher, microscope, and automatic micro-hardness tester
  • Support new program launches with potential high risk analysis and tracking open issues for resolution
  • Identify common cause issues across processes and establish interim and permanent corrective actions
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data for feedback and key metric improvement
  • Strong communication skills to support meetings at all levels of the company, including senior leadership
  • Exhibit a willingness to do things differently and consistently translate ideas into actions that deliver results
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work in a team environment

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Ceramics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in the metallurgical, chemical, or material field
  • Ability to use the following testing equipment: e.g. Tensile Compression Tester, Wilson Hardness Tester, Profile Projector, Stereoscope, MG Microscope, Brake Fluid Boiling Point Tester, Dualscope, Hydrometer, Refractometer, Color Matching Booth, etc.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • MS in Metallurgical Engineering
