Staff Counsel - International Trade and Compliance Job, Auburn Hills, MI

Come join our Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) NAFTA Legal Team where we are committed to partnering with our internal clients and external counsel to effectively manage complex legal matters. Be a part of a team filled with collaborative, resourceful and determined lawyers who play a vital role in our business activities. The Staff Counsel - International Trade and Compliance position will provide strategic legal support and guidance to FCA management and business leaders on matters related to customs, export controls, and trade sanctions. In addition, this position will assist the Assistant General Counsel with a variety of international matters.

Responsibilities include:
  • Negotiate dealer/distributor agreements and terminations
  • Supervise and manage international litigation, mostly centered around commercial matters, but including some international product liability litigation
  • Monitor updates to export laws and regulations; modify export processes and procedures as necessary to ensure compliance
  • Directly supervise administrative proceedings before customs authorities and related litigation
  • Support international compliance initiatives including anti-bribery/anti-boycotting training, export controls, and others
  • Participate in the third party due diligence review program, including review of due diligence reports regarding dealer/distributors, consultants and suppliers
  • Provide counsel on international trade issues
  • Effectively manage outside legal counsel

Basic Qualifications:

  • JD degree with a strong academic background and membership in a legal state bar
  • No less than 7 years of progressive professional legal experience with at least 3 years of substantive law firm experience
  • Substantive experience in handling customs and export/import matters
  • Proven ability to establish to manage a diverse client base and establish strong cross-functional relationships at all levels and geographies
  • Ability to develop an innovative approach to legal issues in support of strategic business initiatives and objectives



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in advising clients concerning legal and/or regulatory requirements applicable to the manufacturing, procurement, and distribution of goods, preferably in an international setting
  • Work experience with legal issues affecting the automotive industry
  • Work experience as in-house attorney at a large multinational company
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team to resolve complex matters
