The Powertrain NVH Development Engineer primary responsibility is to develop NVH functional attributes for engines, transmission and drivelines to meet customer expectations and market requirements. The Powertrain NVH Development Engineer delivers reliable NVH data and communicates NVH requirements to enable decision making in cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment. The Powertrain NVH Development Engineer is also a liaison between the Powertrain organization and Vehicle organization with regards to NVH attributes on a system level.

The scope of responsibilities includes:

  • Plan, conduct, and complete NVH testing tailored to the specific system under test and development needs
  • Provide guidance and directions to in-house and outside NVH resources regarding test plans, test set-up, instrumentation, data acquisition and engine / vehicle operating conditions
  • Thorough analysis of NVH data including summary and recommendations
  • Working closely with Powertrain hardware, NVH CAE, Calibration teams and Vehicle teams to ensure the objectives are met for future powertrains, options and solutions are communicated with the respective teams
  • Establish NVH targets based on competitive analysis and customer expectations
  • Where NVH performance does not meet customer expectations, provide guidance and recommendations on how NVH performance can be improved
  • Support Powertrain hardware and calibration teams with root cause analysis, issue resolution on powertrain dynamometers and in-vehicle
  • Research and develop new technologies to address future NVH requirements

Typical tasks include:

  • Sound Pressure measurement for engines per Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE J1074)
  • Sound Intensity and Sound Power measurements on engines
  • Sound Quality measurements and analysis
  • Vehicle Interior Noise measurement (SAE J336)
  • Sound Quality measurements and analysis
  • Vibration measurements on powertrain, powertrain components and vehicle structures
  • Competitive benchmark and analysis
  • Support or establish cross functional meetings

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field
  • Demonstrated experience/skills in the NVH area or Academic coursework focused on NVH
  • Working knowledge of the following tools: Function model, DFMEA, DVP&R systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated experience/skills in Transmission, Driveline and/or Engine NVH is beneficial
  • Green Belt or Black Belt Six-Sigma certification
  • Proficiency in the following software packages to perform and analyze NVH measurements:
    • LMS Test.Lab
    • Head Acoustics ArtemiS
