Vehicle Dynamics Performance Engineer - Advanced Engineering Job, Auburn Hills, MI

The Vehicle Dynamics Performance Engineer in Advanced Development is primarily responsible to lead the vehicle team's activities to determine vehicle dynamics functional objectives and to develop a plan to deliver. This involves competitive and internal benchmarking, using brand DNA, and working with the vehicle integration teams to set ride, handling and steering functional objectives. This engineer will work with the simulation group to formulate a technical strategy for execution involving characteristics for kinematics, compliance, and tires. This individual will also plan, develop and verify with physical validation (proof of concept) while leading the vehicle dynamics execution. The Performance Engineer will work with the platform group leading up to a subjective and objective confirmation of targets. Travel will be minimal as most vehicle testing would be conducted locally. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to execution and documentation of development activities and presentation of results to senior management (MRs, VIRs, SRs, UR) as well as coordination of prototype vehicles, tuning components, and union mechanic activities.

Please note: Handling testing can be physically demanding. Time will be split between Auburns Hills and Chelsea, MI for the physical validation.

 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited university
  • Five years of combined professional experience in the fields of engineering, vehicle development or motorsports
  • Three years of relevant experience in steering/suspension/tire/chassis release & development or vehicle dynamics development
  • Strong ability to synthesize data and clearly present data to senior leadership
  • Ability to lead and proven team building skills
  • Strong understanding of automotive steering and suspension components and function
  • Understanding of basic vehicle dynamics theory

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in automotive ride and handling development
  • Previous licensing to operate vehicles at limit on closed tracks and facilities
  • Data acquisition and data processing skills
  • Understanding of advanced dynamics theory or simulation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Organized, self-motivated, work as required supporting projects
  •  High performance driving experience and proficiency
  • Vehicle ride and handling subjective evaluation experience
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Flexibility to work either at the Proving Grounds in Chelsea, MI or at the Tech Center in Auburn Hills
