The Engine System Safety Controls & SW Engineer is key position which designs and develops production engine controls strategies for the Torque Security Controls which can be turned into software in operation on our Global Powertrain Electronic Control (GPEC). The successful candidate will join a growing team at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Technology Center (CTC) and work with their counterparts at Chelsea Proving Grounds (CPG).

The Engine System Safety -- COE is responsible for delivering Controls & Software for the GPEC ECU family and will provide changes to torque security algorithms development and production issue resolution status to Engine System Safety Supervisor, or Project Management Coordinators (PMCs). The Engineer will participate in high-level, function requirements development and DFMEA analysis for new strategies with systems engineers, prepare preliminary calibrations for software and controls verification and validation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) instrumentation or a vehicle to acquire data or other data sources to verify the new algorithms.

Our Gasoline - Engine System Safety Team has opportunities to provide exciting and challenging assignments to experienced powertrain and engine control algorithm development engineers in the areas of: Integrated powertrain control (Torque Security, torque characterization, engine/transmission interactions; driveability; hybrid interactions (powertrain optimization strategies); utilization of sensors in feedback and feedforward control strategies.

Algorithm development is done using Matlab-Simulink and rapid prototyping tools. The work is performed in the vehicle, dynamometer and/or simulator environment. The successful candidate will use these tools to develop algorithms and follow the development through to production software, including the development of all supporting documentation (includes DFMEA, testing and validation reports) and calibration guides.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree relevant to Engineering (I.e. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Information degrees, or other suitable degree related to Engineering from an ABET accredited university)
  • Engine-controls-related work
  • Good experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Good experience in Matlab/Simulink
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good understanding of gasoline engine combustion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from a university
  • Automotive experience either at work or university, such as Formula SAE, SAE EcoCar, or other university automotive activity
  • Experience using ETAS INCA Tool experience for collecting embedded data
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong project coordination skills
  • Strong understanding of the development of embedded software
  • Thorough understanding of gasoline engine combustion and principles of aftertreatment
  • Flexibility -- must be able to adapt to changing environment with minimal effect on productivity
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of management
