The FCA Powertrain organization is currently seeking a Catalyst Development Engineer to join the team at the Chrysler Headquarters and Technical Center in Auburn Hills, MI. The Catalyst Development Engineer will be responsible for system level design and validation of the diesel after treatment systems, responsible for definition of functional and performance objectives of the sub-systems, and having the authority to make decisions on trade-offs to optimize system efficiency. The candidate will assist in developing engine calibrations to meet SULEV emission standards at lowest system cost while delivering world-class drivability.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work in concert with the base engine hardware releasing groups, scientific labs, and vehicle teams. Work with Regulatory Affairs to understand Emission and OBD regulations
  • Work with P/T Regulatory to establish phase-in strategy
  • Establish boundary conditions, specifications, System FMEA & DVP, identify and process system trade-offs and system sign off
  • Identify catalyst positions and limits, sensor position, doser position and spray, mixing/decomp design
  • Identify requirements and assist in defining strategy to meet OBD for ATS
  • Identify limitations and manage trade-offs
  • Expertise in diesel catalyst, substrates and loading
  • Provide component definition, development testing, aging, benchmarking and road map
  • Responsible for specification, doser position, boundary conditions
  • Define urea delivery specifications. Use simulation tools on assemblies with all integrated components to develop designs to meet all flow, uniformity and temperature requirements
  • Define System DVP, plan and track system level validation testing, track component develop and implement best practice design and calibration solutions
  • Perform verification testing in accordance with Powertrain System Functional Objective
  • Use standard instrumentation toolsets for data acquisition, storage, and analysis
  • Develop and track hardware and calibration solutions that meet system functional objectives
  • Provide regular overview summaries and detailed reports on specific assignments, including timing projections.
  • Travel throughout the year for issue discovery and system validation/verification

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent from an ABET accredited university
  • Minimum 8 years of engineering experience
  • Ability to analyze, plan, and solve complex system problems as they relate to engines and emissions
  • Fundamental understanding of internal combustion engine function
  • Data acquisition experience at collecting and processing data
  • MATLAB / SIMULINK experience
  • Familiar with Design For Six Sigma (DFSS), System FMEA, and DVP&R
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including PowerPoint presentations to upper management
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised, recognize priority and get it done


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • Database management of production calibrations
  • Experience in emissions systems calibration development
  • 1 year ETAS INCA tool experience or equivalent data acquisition experience
  • 1 year experience with MATLAB / SIMULINK in engine controls environment
