The BIW Advanced Structures and Optimization Engineer will lead the creation and analysis of advanced Body in White (BIW) structures and prepare Finite Element (FE) mesh for CAE assessment under the direction of body design leads. The Advanced Structures Engineer will run CAE analysis and optimization studies of models in different FE analysis codes including LS-Dyna, Nastran and Isight/OptiStruct. The Engineer will be responsible for identifying and applying optimization parameters (e.g. shape, gauge, material, topology) to the concept model, preparing the model for optimization, and running the optimization study on FCA's HPC system. Where appropriate, the engineer will apply topology, topography and shape optimization tools to generate design concepts, and utilize mesh morphing of designs for rapid concept analysis. The Engineer will prepare reports and summaries of structural performance, and work with engineers to design countermeasures and improvements to the analyzed concept. Coordination of offshore analysis resources will also be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • Familiarity with automotive body structures, design and assembly processes and materials used in BIW design
  • 8 years of engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience in CAE analysis for body design
  • 1 year of experience in Isight or equivalent optimization software (modeFrontier, Hyperstudy, Nastran Solution 200)
  • Knowledge of automotive materials and materials science, including steel, aluminum, composites
  • Able to manage multiple assignments and tasks simultaneously
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in CAE on automotive vehicle and BIW structures
  • Knowledge of topology and topography optimization
  • Knowledge of FE mesh morphing tools
  • Understanding of structural theory and properties of thin-walled sections
  • Background in DFSS theory and process
  • Basic knowledge of Teamcenter, NX and VisProfessional viewer
