The Maintenance Unit Leader will lead and direct skilled trades and/or production team members in all aspects of maintenance activities at the Etobicoke Casting Plant. The Maintenance Unit Leader is responsible for: addressing throughput and downtime related issues with equipment in a production environment and ensuring adherence to safe work practices; coordinating activities according to World Class manufacturing (WCM) standards; specifically in support of the Professional Maintenance and Autonomous Maintenance Pillars; and having a positive impact the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) through a systematic approach of planning and executing key maintenance enablers and activities utilizing the TMS system and PM Pillar methodology.
Additional responsibilities of the Maintenance Unit Leader will be, but not limited to:

  • Leading WCM activities
  • Directing and leading staff in the everyday scheduling, preventative maintenance and repair of all production equipment
  • Providing technical support on breakdown issues (EWO report) and problem solving (Kaizen projects)
  • Maintaining equipment and parts inventory with TMS/SAP/Tool-Stores to minimize downtime (MTTR)
  • Keeping the Maintenance Workshop organized; 5S and housekeeping activities
  • Using TMS (Total Maintenance System) for management of PMs and Work Tickets
  • Inspiring and motivating the team to a higher maintenance standard
  • Ensuring all work is done adhering to established health and safety standards
  • Availability and flexibility to work 3 shifts, weekends and other overtime as deemed necessary to meet the business objectives of the department
  • Managing the investigation of production issues related to volume and quality and establish the root cause
  • Implementing correction measures to improve quality and throughput
  • Other duties as required 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Applied Science or degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a Bachelor's degree in a non-technical field combined with appropriate technical experience as a CET or journey tradesman (electrician, millwright or toolmaker)
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal along with the ability to work with all level of management
  • Must be able to travel within Ontario and USA locations
  • Ability to work any shift in a 3 shift operation and overtime as required
  • Must possess a working knowledge of advanced technical problem solving tools
  • Excellent organization, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interface with various levels of employees within all areas of the plant from hourly represented employees to Senior Leadership as required
  • Goal oriented and a self-starter and ability to lead and manage in a team based structure
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field
  • Experience in providing direction to and managing a Canadian Auto Workers (UNIFOR) represented workforce is an asset
  • Experience in an automotive related facility and experience with World Class Manufacturing (WCM) as asset
  • Green Belt/ Red X/ Six Sigma training
  • Manufacturing supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability and passion to coach/mentor/develop team members
  • Experience working in any union environment
  • Strong background in LEAN manufacturing systems
  • Experience with machine installation, start-up and debug
  • Experience with Die Casting equipment (Buhler/Prince machines)
  • Experience with molten metal furnaces and molten handling equipment
  • Experience with gas fired melt furnaces and electric holding furnaces
  • Experience with factory automation and machine guarding and safety principles
  • Experience with robotic automation; Fanuc and Nachi robotics
  • Experience with PLCs including PLC-5 and ControlLogix using RSLink and RSLogix software
  • Experience with other facilities and automation include Allen Bradley Drive Systems, x-ray equipment, conveyor systems, waste water treatment systems, air compressor and cooling water systems
  • Plant electrical power distribution, including sub-station and MCCs would be considered beneficial
